Daily Prothom Alo published the supplementary on roundtable discussion titled ‘Implementing Laws to Prevent Violence against Women, its Challenge & Way Forward’ held on November 24, 2015.

PHR Partner BNWLA arranged this roundtable discussion where participants were public prosecutor, judge, attorney general, lawyer and Chair of Marriage Registrar Samittee headed by Fazilatunnesa Bappy, MP and member of parliamentary standing committee on law justice and parliamentary affairs.

Discussion focused on the limitation of two major Acts of Bangladesh – Women & Children Repression Act 2000 and Dowry Prohibition Act 1980.

16 days activism starts from 25 November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, to 10 December, Human Rights Day. The 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence Campaign is a time to galvanize action to end violence against women and girls around the world. The international campaign originated from the first Women’s Global Leadership Institute coordinated by the Center for Women’s Global Leadership in 1991.

PROTHOM ALO ROUNDTABLE ON IMPLEMENTATION OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE (PREVENTION AND PROTECTION) ACT 2010

On the 9th of July 2015, the USAID-funded Protecting Human Rights (PHR) Program of Plan International partnered with Bangladesh’s leading newspaper, Prothom Alo, to organize a roundtable on the implementation and effectiveness of Domestic Violence (Prevention and Protection) Act 2010. The Roundtable discussions centered on the challenges victims face when accessing the rights provided by the DV Act 2010. Participants offered suggestions on ways to overcome barriers and ensure that cases are reported and the law is implemented.

PHR’S MEDIA ROUNDTABLE ON SEXUAL HARASSMENT, GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE & THE ROLE OF MEDIA

On the 9th of June 2015, PLAN’s Protecting Human Rights (PHR) Program, which is funded by USAID, conducted a Media Roundtable in co-sponsorship with Women’s Journalist Network Bangladesh to discuss the powerful role of media in covering sexual harassment and gender-based violence in Bangladesh at local and national levels.  Senait Gerbegziabher, Country Director of PLAN International welcomed the participants and began the event. The US Ambassador Marcia Bernicat offered her inspiring remarks followed by words from Eileen O’Connor, Deputy Assistant U.S. Secretary of State for South and Central Asia.
